Kleinpeter & Cramer: Artificial Insemination Benefits

Because of its many benefits, artificial insemination has become the most common method of equine breeding today. These benefits include a decrease risk of injury to both mare and stallion, increased stallion productivity, greater access to stallions in remote locations and decreased mare shipping/boarding expense.

Procedures

The process of artificial insemination begins by daily ultrasonic examination of the mare. In this way, we are able to determine when the mare is in estrous and predict the expected time of ovulation. At the appropriate time, semen is shipped from the pre-arranged stallion and is used to inseminate the mare.  The mare is then examined on subsequent days to guarantee ovulation takes place and to monitor the uterine health. Finally, pregnancy is diagnosed in the mare 14 days after ovulation.
