Lamenss > Ultrasound Ultrasound What once was merely seen as a tendon bow or swollen leg can now be 'seen' through ultrasonography by the doctors at Kleinpeter & Cramer. The doctor will locate an area of interest through the lameness examination, history, and nerve blocks. If a tear to a tendon or ligament is suspected, the area is surveyed with an ultrasound probe to examine the fibers in question. Tendon bows are now known to be due to swelling and tearing of the fibers of the tendons which can be visualized using ultrasonography. Ultrasound works by transmitting soundwaves into a tissue which bounce off of the tissue at different rates depending on tissue density. Swelling, or fluid, in a tendon produces an image with more black in it because more of the soundwaves have passed through the fluid than the surrounding tendon.
