Shockwave Therapy

By applying concentrated shockwave therapy to injured tendons and ligaments the doctors at Kleinpeter & Cramer are able to significantly reduce the rehabilitation time of their patients. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is a relatively new method of treatment for lameness in horses.

Developed for use in humans, it has been used for more than 20 years in the treatment of kidney stones and various orthopedic diseases such as tennis elbow.

Shockwaves are high-energy sound waves focused by the machine then transmitted to the affected body part. The shockwaves then encourage healing by triggering natural repair mechanisms. Studies have shown that shockwaves stimulate bone formation, healing of tendons and ligaments and produce marked analgesia (pain relief). Shockwave therapy is useful for a number of conditions which cause lameness in the horse. These conditions include:

  • Suspensory ligament disease
  • Bowed tendons
  • Ringbone
  • Bone spavin
  • Splints
  • Sore backs
  • Navicular syndrome
  • Delayed or non-healing fractures

Treatments require 10-20 minutes each and are performed every 4-6 weeks for 3 treatments in our comprehensive rehabilitation program.
